Created in 1991, alt.mythology is a newsgroup dedicated mythology (myths, fables, legends, their history, impact on culture, etc.). Alt.mythology focuses on oral and written folklore and welcomes various perspectives on the study of mythology, from anthropological to psychological. Some popular myths that are discussed in the newsgroup include various creation stories, discussion of mythical beings (the phoenix), flood and other disaster myths, various myths about gods and heroes, and more. Recent posts have focused on varying cultures including Greek, Roman, Native American, Egyptian, various other African, Hebrew, Jewish, and American myths. Lots of discussion about Biblical myths occur within the alt.mythology Usenet group, but the newsgroup's FAQ discourages proselytizing or demeaning conversation regarding religion.
