According to its FAQ, soc.motss, formed in 1983, is "the oldest newsgroup for lesbian and gay people". This diverse newsgroup covers a myriad of topics of interest to the LGBTO community from politics to culture to health, and welcomes people from all backgrounds to comment and discuss within the group, citing only intolerance and demands for justification of one's sexual orientation as unacceptable. News items, personal stories, television, movie, and music are all common subjects of conversations throughout the newsgroup and there is a great deal of supportive, personal support and sharing that occurs within the group, along with the joking, serious discussion, and questions which are common amongst newsgroups.
